The Friends of The Level's response to
The Level Consultation is: Please choose Option 1

The Council's Parks Project Team is in the process of consulting local residents about proposals to redevelop The Level.  This consultation consists of bombarding 28,000 homes with a Questionnaire and Information Sheet. One of the two options in the Council's consultation: Option 2, would threaten our green open space by the building of a sunken concrete skatepark on the northern lawns. So Friends of The Level has launched a campaign to persuade residents of Brighton (who have been able to use the northern end of the Level for recreation and gatherings for hundreds of years) that this area needs to be protected from such a plan.
Friends of The Level is asking everyone to choose Option 1 in the Questionnaire because although we want The Level to be improved and restored, we do not want the most important area of The Level: its town green character, to be destroyed and lost forever.
By choosing Option 1 residents will be getting ALL the benefits and improvements of Option 2 whilst at the same time preserving the cultural and historical heritage of The Level which is the open green area to the north, and the benefits are:

MAXIMUM GREEN OPEN AREA (EVENT AND PICNIC LAWNS)
SKATE PARK
TODDLER PLAY AREA
JUNIOR PLAY AREA
CAFE
FLOWER GARDEN AND PICNIC LAWNS
ROSE WALK
FOUNTAINS
PERIMETER SEATING
ARTWORK
PETANQUE

We also would ask that you sign our petition Keep The Level a Green Open Space on the council website because by doing so you will be demonstrating, unequivocably, that the north end of The Level must remain open and green for all.
Why is FoTL taking this action?
Because at the SGM held on 21 February, FoTL resolved " to support a Second Stage HLF bid ONLY if it maintains the north end of The Level as a green and open space, and the skatepark in the south end."
The Triangle Community Group has also voiced its total opposition to any building on the north end of The Level in much the same way that FoTL has. Yet again demonstrating how much local opposition there is to Option 2.
